  • Pre 1800s
  • 1760 - 1840
  • Urbanisation
  • Most people lived as farmers/ agriculture in primary sector jobs. The population was majority in rural areas.
  • 1970s
  • The Industrial revolution where people moved to the countryside to cities to work in factories (secondary jobs). This is called Rural to Urban migration.
  • Globalisation
  • Cities grew through urbanisation and offered lots of opportunities, however conditions could be rough. The cities built tightly packed terraced housing ( no garden, no garage) to cope with the population density. Factories were big pull factors for people.
  • 1970s - Onwards
  • Machines began to replace people and things became automated during Margaret Thatcher's reign. This saw the start of de-industrialization and resulted in massive unemployment for coal mining industries and factory workers.
  •
  • As factories closed, products became cheap overseas. These abandoned factories became derelict and encouraged anti-social behavior (crime). Only some cities created regeneration plans to renovate these spaces.
  • The UK saw a rapid increase of people in tertiary jobs that replaced factory workers. The UK is now HIC and world leader in finance, media, research and entertainment. We are now seeing a quaternary sector ; service jobs.
