- The chorus celebrates Oedipus' accomplishment in providing hope to Thebes through his generosity as king, then recounts how Oedipus turns out to be not nearly as powerful as formerly assumed, due to his dark history and fulfillment of the prophesy being revealed.
- We all thought Oedipus was such a good king and person, but turns out he is not nearly as mighty as we thought due to his dark past and more like us so human sufferring is part of lifes destiny.
- A second messenger arrives, informing everyone that the queen has died.
- Where is my sword
- The queen has died! I saw it all with my own eyes.
- Oedipus picks up his sword and rushes inside Jocasta's bedroom.
- Oedipus storms in and finds Jocasta's dead body, he then stabs his eyes with her brooches, and begins to blame himself.
- I accept full responsibility, but how could the gods allow this to happen?
- Creon enters the chamber with Oedipus' children and attempts to console him, telling him that he does not need to be banished, but Oedipus insists that he should.
- Creon, please look after the girls since no one will want them after this, and then send me away.
- Fine, but you must leave your children here since you no longer have authority over them.
- You do not have to do all of this; you can simply stay.
- Oedipus questions Creon about why he is treating him so well, and Creon responds with one of the story's most crucial morals, which he manages to persuade Oedipus to agree with.
- Why do you still treat me so well after all this?
- Yes, I do
- For even you must now trust in the gods.
