- The antagonist of the story is the narrator. His main goal throughout the entire story is to prove his sanity by describing how carefully he planned and carried out the murder of an old man. He begins by telling the listener that the motive for murder is nothing more than the sight of the old man's "vulture eye".
- Climax
- The narrator was being kind to the old man for a whole week before he killed him. Throughout that whole week, the narrator was carefully watching the old man sleep. Every night at midnight, he would make a small crevice in a lantern to see if his "vulture eye" was open. After every night in the morning, the narrator would ask the old man how he slept so he could make sure that the old man didn't suspect anything. At this point of the story the narrator is feeling very sagacious
- Falling Action
- On the eighth night, the narrator laughs at his genius/cunningness and he wakes up the old man. When the old man wakes up, there was a one hour standoff between the old man (sitting in bed) and the narrator (standing and watching without moving a muscle). Then, the narrator sees the old man's eye is open. The narrator thinks he hears the old man's heart beat( the narrators anxiety is increasing). The narrator thinks that the old mans heart beat is getting louder and he thinks that the old man's loud heart beat will wake up the neighbors.
- Resolution
- The narrator yells and as he does that he jumps up into the old mans room. The narrator finally kills the old man by smothering him with a mattress.
- After he kills the old man, the narrator chops up his body in a bathtub. Then, the narrator hides the body parts under the floor boards. Soon after he hides the body parts, the police arrive at the house because some neighbors heard a shriek. the narrator invite's the police inside so they could search the house and sits and chats with them. lastly, when they are chatting the narrator has the audacity to pull up a chair and sit on top of the chopped up body hidden beneath the floor boards.
- while the police and the narrator are chatting, the two police officers start talking to each other and and starting laughing and the narrator thought they knew everything and they were laughing in derision. Then, the narrator anxiety starts to increase and hears the old man's heart beat again. Lastly, the narrator finally confesses due to the pressure, guilt, and anxiety.
