  • EXPOSITION
  • RISING ACTION
  • CLIMAX
  • My name is Abigail Lively. I was a slave in Montgomery, Alabama. I was born on a plantation and was raised by my grandmother, my father and mother were sold to another plantation when I was very young and I think they died soon after. I take care of my master's 2 kids Annabelle and Max. My master is kind to me but my mistress is not, she is always watching me and whenever I make the tiniest mistake she whips me.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • The children were very sweet. They had just started school. They couldn't understand why I didn't know how to read or write so they taught me. One day their mother came in and saw that they were teaching me and their mother got really angry. She said that they should stop teaching me because it isn't a slaves business to know how to read.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Those words were harsh and they stuck with me. Fortunately she was too late I knew how to read and I had books. As I was reading the books about slavery there was a pain that I felt. We were humans like our masters but they treat us like we are cows just because of what color we are. Everyday from then on I felt pain and a longing to be free I needed to escape.
  • I planned to escape. I was talking to other slaves and found out that there was an Underground Railroad that helped slaves. I set off into the woods bound for New York. I walked during the night the water and other people helped me. I made there safely with many close encounters with slave catchers. I think I was about 19 years old when I reached the free state.
  • I met a family, the Jacksons, they were let me stay with them. I met a man by the name of Samuel Smith. We got married and my name then became Abigail Smith. Shortly after we got married my husband bought out my freedom. It was wonderful being free I was able to walk down the street and not have a fear that someone was going to take me back to my master.
