Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it was legal to discriminate against others based on skin color. Although some thought of segregation as "separate but equal", it was not equal. The reader sees this very real racism and cruelty throughout the story.
Rose's family is not always kind and loving. In fact, her grandmother is simply mean and Rose's mother abandoned her and her brother. However, it is clear that Rose loves and honors her family.
The characters in this novel show courage in many different ways. One example is when Levi, one of the field hands, registered to vote even though he knew the risks. Sadly, he was shot and killed.
