Humans waste words. They toss them like banana peels and leave them to rot. This means that humans discard what they say, with very little or no thought.

Stella is a mountain. Next to her I am a rock. Bob is a grain of sand. The author is saying that Stella is huge, and next to her Ivan and Bob look like rocks and sand next to a mountain.

My drawings seem pale and timid next to Julia's. This means that Julia's are outstanding, and Ivan thinks his are nothing in comparison.
