- Ordinary World
- Huck Finn lives with the Widow Douglas. Huck is miserable as she and Mrs. Watson attempt to "civilize" him.
- Crossing the Threshold
- After Pap kidnaps Huck when he demands his money, Huck fakes his own death and ends up meeting Jim on Jackson Island and pledges not to return to the Widow Douglas and Jim can now escape to freedom.
- Refusing the Call
- Huck has second thoughts of helping Jim escape. He wonders if taking Jim from his "rightful owner" is morally acceptable.
- Tests/Allies/Enemies
- Society is Huck and Jim's enemy. When Huck is on Jackson island with Jim, a search party shoots cannons into the water in hopes of retrieving his body. Huck is allied with Jim, who he intends to free. The Duke and King end up betraying Jim when they set him up to be captured.
- Return
- Huck is forced to return to the real world and back into normal society. Once again, he is no longer free to do what he pleases and is back to being conformed.
- Jim is freed in Mrs. Watson's will. Huck's view on human nature and race have changed. The hypocrisy and corruption of the civilized society he lives in becomes more identifiable to him.
