I am so nervous. Our baby will be born in a new land.
Will you be my new friend?
This is wonderful?!
LAND!! Thank you, Jesus.
Only 3 months and we will have shelter. But first, WINTER!
My water just broke. Call the doctor...oh.
There goes the forest.
This is wonderful ...but what about those Indians?
Living the dream...or trying to...
Meet Virginia!
Who said?!
In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh sent John White, his family, and about 100 others to Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. It was the second attempt to settle overseas. They arrived in July.
What? You said this was going to be wonderful. Now you are leaving??!?
HE is leaving?!
Uhoh.
I have to go back to England. We need supplies. You will be fine in this dangerous land without me. It is wonderful. I will be back very soon.
That August, John White's daughter gave birth to a baby girl, Virginia Dare. She was the first child born to English parents in the New World.
It's been three years and I haven't been able to return because of weather conditions. They need me.
I have booked your passage back to Roanoke.
Guess I am going with him?
Safe!
The relations with the Amerindians are good at first but then deteriorated. The colonists formed an alliance with the Croatoan Indians.
I cannot wait to see my family--especially my granddaughter, Virginia.
Are those all our supplies floating down there?!
Wonderful.
The new land and weather was harsh. John White returns to England for supplies.
Mr. White, I do not see any signs of them here?
Did he really think they'd still be here?
He is unable to return to the colony for three years.
He arrived back to Roanoke the day before what would have been his granddaughter's third birthday.
Time to go!
Welcome Back.
Before he left, White instructed the colonists to leave him a message if they were forced to leave.
Where could they have gone? I told them to carve me a message if they had to leave.
When he returned, the only sign of the colonists were the letters "CROATOAN" carved on a post and "CRO" carved on a nearby tree. Croatoan was a nearby island.
LOOK.
Wonderful!But what does that mean?
?
White and his men searched for the colonists. They were never found. The fate of the "Lost Colony" still remains a mystery. Many landmarks are now named after Virginia Dare.
If only they asked...
Anyone else a little freaked out right now?
