There once lived a Chief named Ueneuku. He had 71 sons who were all chiefs except for one. Ruatapu, had a slave mother so he was of no importance.
All of you will become chiefs except for you, Ruatapu. You are of no importance.
One day Uenuku decided to build a canoe. When he brought all his sons together, he combed and oiled there hair, one by one.
Father, are you going to comb my hair as well
These combs are sacred, they cannot be used on the hair of people of no importance
Ruatapu was very ashamed. So once everyone was alseep he cut a hole in the bottom of the canoe that they had built.
This is so unfair!!! I am going to get revenge
The next morning, all 71 sons set sail. After awhile Ruatapu uncovered the dirt he stuffed inside the hole and water started rushing in.#160;
Quickly bail out the water or we are lost!
Eventually Ruatapu had his revenge for all his brothers were drowned except for one; Paikea.#160;
Which of us will carry the news to land?
I will. I am descended from the god of the sea, Tangaroa. I will not drown.#160;
Tangaroa heard Paikea and sent a whale to take him to land. Ruatapu recited 5 magical incantations and sent#160; great waves to Paikea. However the waves hit the shore and bounced back, drowning Ruatapu.
