- A fireman named Montag meets a women named Clarisse while walking home from work one day. She asks him if shes happy. Although it is a seemingly innocent question, it causes Montag to evaluate his whole life.
- Montag sees a woman who burned herself with her books. Even though it is illegal, he takes a book because his own curiosity gets the best of him.
- Montag's chief, Captain Beatty, knows that he taken a book and attempts to explain why they have been censored, in hopes of reasoning with him. Beatty says many verses of literature to memory despite his job forcing the destruction of literature.
- Montag has some internal fights but ends up telling his wife, Mildred about the book he took and his doubts about the life they are leading. She ends up becoming overwhelmed and freaking out about them breaking the law.
- After Mildred freaks out about the book Montag remembers a literature professor he met a few years ago. He decides to pay him a visit and ask him some questions. They come up with a plan to fight the current status of the world.
- Enraged, Montag reads a poem to his wife and her friends who have come over to watch television. The ladies leave disgusted, offended and threaten to file a complaint against him.
