- Hippolyta and Theseus are talking about getting married when Egeus complains to them saying that Hermia doesn't want to marry Demetrius. So the king gave her three options: execution, nunnery or listening to her father - who wants her to marry Demetrius. When Theseus, Hippolyta and Egeus leave, Lysander and Hermia come to cheer Hermia up. Lysander secretly tells Hermia that they can run off together into the woods tonight to find his Aunts house, but Hermia tells Helena about this. Helena thought that if she told Demetrius about this he might stop loving Hermia and start loving Helena instead.
- The mechanicals (Quince, Bottom, Snout, Flute, Snug and Starveling) meet up and Quince tells everyone their roles in the play they will perform at Theseus's and Hippolyta's wedding, Pyramus and Thisbe. Bottom plays the part of Pyramus but he thinks he can play every part because he is the'best'. Flute plays Thisbe. Starveling plays Thisbe's mother. Snug plays the lion. Starveling and Flute are not happy that they are playing women.
- Faries (Moth, Peaseblossom, Mustardseed and Cobweb) are dancing in the woods before Puck jumps in and scares them. The Faries ask Puck if he is THE Puck and he says yes. The Faries then introduce their boss Titania (queen of the faries) and Puck introduces his boss Oberon (king of the faries). Oberon and Titania have a fight and then Titania leaves. Oberon wants to get her back, so he asks Puck to go and get a flower. When Puck is gone Oberon sees an Athenian couple, (Helena and Demetrius) arguing. When puck gets back, Oberon turns it into a love potion to use on Titania, but he also gives puck some so he can use it on an Athenian couple.
- Titania goes home and asks the faries to sing her to sleep. Whilst she is sleeping, Oberon sneaks in and puts a love potion on her eyes and tells her to wake when something vile is near. Oberon leaves and Lysander and Hermia enter, and they decide to go to sleep. Puck enters and sees the Athenian couple and and places the love potion in the eyes of Lysander. Demetrius and Helena enter, still arguing. Demetrius manages to distract Helena and run away, but Helena turns round and sees Lysander asleep. She wakes him up and he immediately falls in love with her, so she runs away and Hermia wakes up looking for Lysander
- The Mechanicals enter after deciding to rehearse in the woods, and Puck is watching them. Bottom goes of to the side to warm up whilst Quince is talking to Flute and Starveling about their parts as women. When Bottom is warming up, Puck grabs him and pulls him away. Puck turns Bottom's head into a donkey's head so he can fall in love with Titania. When Bottom returns, the mechanicals scream and run away. All that noise made Titania wake up and she instantly fell in love with Bottom.
- Puck tells Oberon about Titania falling in love with Bottom. Hermia enters and not far behind, Demetrius follows. Hermia keeps telling Demetrius that she doesn't love him, they both leave. Oberon scolds puck for making the wrong Athenian couple in love. Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius enter, and a few seconds later Puck freezes them all, he throws pixie dust on Demetrius and Demetrius becomes madly in love with Helena. Puck unfreezes them and both Lysander and Demetrius are madly in love with Helena, but Hermia gets jealous and starts fighting Helena whilst the boys chase them.
