- Long time ago there was a poor family living in the foot of the mountain.
- Even though they are not rich they are still contended, thankful and happy.
- In those barbarous days abandoning old people to die was a common thing. But they can't do anything but to obey it. The teen just prepare themselves for that time and thinking that, that is the kindest modest of death
- They are not rich but they own a little bit of land. So to make up for living they plant fruits.
- After finishing his day job he cook unwhitened rice, the principal food for the poor. After cooking it he dried it then tie it in a square cloth
- Due to hunters activity he have a hard time finding the way to the top of the mountain. The loving mother also realize the hastly turning of her son. So he pick up twigs and leaves brushes so the son will not get lost on his way back
- After tying it he bundle it around his neck along with a gourd filled with sweet water. Then he carry his mother and start the painful journey to the mountain Obatsuyama .
- Let no thine eyes be blinded, my son. The mountain road is full of danger. Look carefully and follow the path which holds pile of twigs. They will guide you to the familiar path farther down.
- Farewell my mother.
- At last he reached the top of the mountain. Then he did his last duty to his beloved mother.He created a cushion and wrapped her mother in a warm blanket. Before leaving he said in a broken voice.
- But still her Mother's trembling voice is still full of unselfish love as she give her last junction.
- oh, Honorable mother, your kindness breaks my heart! I will not leave you. Together we will follow the path of twigs and together we will die!
- His heart broke then he bowed while crying. After saying that he carried her mother again and started going back.
- Then with a shocked eyes he looked back to the path. Then back to her mother's hand all shriveled and soiled by her work of love.
- When he got back he immediately hid his mother under the kitchen floor. He supply her with food and clothes day by day. And the mother is getting scared day by day that she might get caught.
- Time pass he is feeling safer. Not until the governor sent heralds and with unreasonable order. It's seemingly a boast of his power. His order is:
