This British defeat was a turning point in the War of 1812, leading both sides to reach a peace agreement later that year. Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the “Star-Spangled Banner'' after this.
- The British attacked Andrew Jackson’s troops in New Orleans. Jackson wins. It was fought without the knowledge of the Treaty of Ghent.
- The US and the British signed a peace treaty in Ghent, Belgium.
