  • Adventures of Limb Boy
  • Welcome to Mr. Gilbert's class
  • Today's lesson is on DNA Structure, Transcription, and Translation
  • First a quick recap from last class. DNA is the genetic code for your body, and basically tells it how to grow and act. Your DNA is passed down from your parents. It has a double helix shape and is antiparallel, meaning the two sides go in opposite directions.
  • Each nucleotide is made up with one sugar labeled S, one phosphate group labeled p, and one nitrogenous base which is either Thymine, Guanine, Cytosine, or Adenine. These nitrogenous bases pair up, with C = G and A = T.
  • Segments of this DNA are called as genes, and each gene codes for one specific protein or action.
  • Now for Transcription, which is the process of taking the instructions in a gene to where they can be turned into proteins. First an enzyme, or protein, called Helicase unwinds and unzips the gene. The gene is then put within another enzyme called as RNA polymerase, which allows for the mRNA to form.
  • mRNA, or messenger RNA, is a type of RNA. RNA is similar to DNA but has a 3 key differences. First it has only one strand or side instead of two. Second, it contains a different sugar known as ribose. And finally, it features a nitrogenous base called as uracil rather than thymine.
  • The fact that it is single stranded allows it to attach to one side of the DNA in place of the the other side, allowing it to copy down the sequence of bases in the DNA.
  • This process takes place in the nucleus where your DNA is.
  • Another way of thinking about it is like a copier machine. By putting in a copy of your information, you'll get a digital version that you can then send anywhere you want. The digital version is much more portable.
  • Now Its Time for Translat...
  • Who are you?
  • And what do you want
  • Ralph Fox, come with me
  • No I don't want to
  • Aaaaaaaaaaaaa
  • Then I'll have to take you by force
  • Who are you, why am I here?
  • Oh I can tell you all that, but to understand it, lets finish your teacher's lesson
