Testo Storyboard

  • In 1791, Toussaint begins a slave revolt in Saint-Dominque in the name of liberty, freedom, and equality for the slaves. He inspired many others to stand up for this, and gained forces quickly. The European Revolutionary Wars soon follow after this.
  • In 1791, slaves started to burn plantations and kill their masters. This made Leger-Felicite Somthonax end slavery in the colony in 1793. In the same year, Toussaint joined forces with the Spanish army against the French.
  • Through 1791-1799, Toussaint's soldiers fought against the French government, invaders, Royalists, and leaders. In 1801, the French government began to reconsider the possibility of ending slavery due to the difficult battles.
  • In 1794, Toussaint left the Spanish army and joined forces with the French. From 1795-1801, Spain gave up Saint Domingue to the French.
  • In 1802, Napoleon reinstated slavery in the French colonies, which had been abolished for some time. He sent 70 warships and 25,000 soldiers to Saint Domingue.
  • Toussaint was arrested and sent to Fort-de-Joux in the Jura Mountains of France. On April 7, 1803, he died of pneumonia and atarvation. The Battle of Vertieres marked the final victory for the revolutionary army over Napoleons army. In 1804, Haiti was finally independent from France
