  • I'm so excited for my doctor's appointment, mom!
  • While I'm here, I want to ask a few questions, Dr. Smith. How is my stomach connected to my brain, and how does my brain control my stomach?
  • Those are great questions, Henry! I will help you answer them.
  • Your brain is a big part of your nervous system, which controls many parts of your body. It controls your senses, movement, and your organs, like your stomach!

  • Next, the stomach and mouth play a big role in the digestive system, or the group of organs that help you eat and digest food. The stomach has acid in it that breaks down the food that you swallow so that you can digest it.
  • Henry's mother walks Henry into the office, then leaves after greeting Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith begins Henry's yearly checkup.Henry has some questions for Dr. Smith.
  • Now, back to your question, Henry. The brain sends signals to the digestive system through the spinal cord that tells the digestive tract when we are eating. The brain also sends signals to our taste receptors to let us know we are craving something!
