- Annie and Danny, a pair of twins, decided to travel the world in celebration of their 18th Birthday. Their first stop was a tropical island. To get there, they needed to ride an airplane. When they were almost there, they saw a sign in the sand. The angle of depression from the airplane to the sign was 20 degrees. The airplane was 40 ft above the sign. Danny wanted to find the horizontal distance from the airplane to the sign. Annie told him that in order to find it he would need to use tangent. She says tan20 = 40/x, and then it becomes x = 40/tan20, which is 109.9, so the horizontal distance from the airplane to the sign would be 109.9 ft.

- After staying on the island for a few days, they decided to go to their next stop, France. After resting, they went to see the Eiffel tower. The distance from the top of their heads to the top of the Eiffel tower was 1000 ft. The angle of elevation was 50 degrees. They wanted to find the distance between them and the tower, so they used cosine to find it. Cos50= x/1000, which is then converted to x = cos50 * 1000, which is 642.8. So the distance between them and the tower is 642.8 ft.

- It was time to leave and go to their next destination. After leaving France, they decided to go to Japan. They wanted to try something different so they took a ship instead of an airplane to get there. While on the ship, they started to play with a kite to pass the time. They started to wonder about the height of the kite. They knew they let out 100 ft of string, and that the kite was flying at an angle of elevation of 30 degrees. So, to calculate the height, they decided to use sine. They calculated that sin30= x/100 --> x= 100 * sin30 , which is equal to 50, so the height of the kite is 50ft.

- When they get to Japan, Annie wants to ride a hot air balloon but Danny doesn't want to, so he decides to wait for her on the floor. The hot air balloon gets farther and farther away from the floor, and after a while, it is 50 ft above ground. The horizontal distance from Danny to the balloon is around 200 ft. Annie wants to know the angle of depression so she uses the inverse of tangent, which is tan^−1. tan^-1 = 50/200, which is 14.03, so the angle of depression would be 14 degrees.
