- Celie is a black girl with natural hair and beautifully melanated skin. She can typically be seen in dresses/skirts, which was very common for women in this time period.
- Celie fell in love with a woman named Shug Avery. They share a very sacred intimate relationship. Shug's confidence in herself and her femininity makes Celie feel safe, despite the hardships she endured throughout her life.
- It wouldn't be a stretch to say Celie is an introvert, which is likely a result of being conditioned to uncomfortable environments. She is very timid and shy. She typically speaks when spoken to.
- Celie had a very difficult relationship with her father. He would rape her as a child, leaving her with two pregnancies before she was even 15. He then sent her off to marry some man. THis gave her a very rough life and negative outlook on men. She didn't feel true sadness when he died.
- Celie struggles with telling how she really feels. As a result of her father's abuse, she doesn't react to disrespect the conventional way. She was raised to be obedient, making her a little too tolerant of mistreatment,
- Celie often describes her love and admiration for her sister, Nettie. They share a very close bond. Celie would bare the pain and trauma of her father's abuse only hoping he wouldn't touch Nettie. She cared deeply for her sister, as did her sister for her.
