- A sixteen-year-old junior expelled from Pencey Prep. School. Throughout the course of the book we find out that Holden has been quite depressed after the passing of his brother Allie. He struggles to find joy in anything and calls everybody a phony.
- Mr. Antolini
- Holden’sten-year-old little sister. She is Holden’s only link to the family. Although she is a lot younger than her brother, Phoebe understands and listens to him more than other people. She is intelligent and a good dancer. Her innocence is one of Holden’s only sources of happiness.
- Stradlater
- Holden’syounger brother. He died of leukemia on July 18, 1946. Holden is tormented by Allie’s death and often speaks to him when in need of help.
- Sally Hayes
- Holden’s former English teacher at Elkton Hills. Holden respects him, describing him as a clever and likeable guy. His behavior in his apartment disturbs Holden.
- Holden’s roommate. Described by the protagonist as handsome and popular but a ‘secret slob’. Holden gets angry at Stradlater after he believes that he had an intimate relationship with an old friend, Jane Gallagher.
- A girl Holden has known and dated for years. He describes her as pretty, phony and not very intelligent. Although he wasn’t too crazy about her, Holden goes on a date with Sally and makes her cry after she refuses to go North with him.
