- Gerta lives in an apartment with her Father, Mother, Her brother named Fritz and her other brother Domicic. Their apartment is small because their apartment was part of the projects . pg4
- Gerta finds herself the next morning behind a wall that split her city of Berlin. Her father and her brother is on the other side and she is unable to see them. She is afraid of what is to come.  pg.11
- Gerta is best friends with a girl named Anna. they both go to the same school in Berlin. They are also in the same class.   pg.48
- Fritz is working in the garden near the welcome building while Gerta is working in the tunnel. They are working in the garden because they want to cover up for the work in the building. pg.127
- Gerta and Fritz are working in the tunnel. Gerta got a new pulley to help with lifting the bucket. Fritz is digging the tunnel while Gerta is carrying the dirt out of the bunker. pg.182
