  • On December 17th 2010, A working class vendor named Mohamid Bouazizi was approached by authorities about his unlicensed cart and offered to pay a fine but his vegetables were confiscated and he was humiliated by the police. In show of protest towards assault, he stood in front of governor's office and set himself on fire but died on January 4th.
  • You have an unlicensed cart? Give us your vegetables.
  • Mohamid's death sparked a Tunisian revolution which protesters armed themselves with signs and their phones for protests to spread. On January 11th, Tunisia's government fell apart and the president Ben Ali fled the country.
  • State news organizations were barely able to keep up due to how quickly it was spreading. The speed and success of the protest inspired others across the region . Throughput January, protests began in Algeria, Jordan, and Oman and by January 25th, the movement reached Egypt, Syria, Iraq and more to follow. While some of the Arab Spring protests did result in regime changes, not all of them brought about positive change for the working class people.
