  • Mood
  • Foreshadowing
  • Irony
  • “peer through the dank tropical night that waspalpable1 as it pressed its thick warmblackness in upon the yacht.” This quote supports the mood of the story, because it shows how the dark gloomy night transitions to the mood of the story.
  • Climax
  • “Do you think we’ve passed that island yet?I can’t tell in the dark. I hope so.Why? asked Rainsford. The place has a reputation — a bad one.” This shows us how Whitney does not have a good feeling about where him and Rainsford are going.
  • Conflict
  • “Turning to the giant in uniform, the general made a sign. The giant put away his pistol, saluted, withdrew.” When the author describes the tall man, they don’t literally mean he is a giant. They just means the man is very tall.
  • Resolution
  • “Now he hadgot a grip on himself, had stopped, and was taking stock of himself and the situation.” This shows how the story is taking a more exciting/ different route.”
  • “It was General Zaroff. He made his way along with his eyes fixed in utmost concentration on theground before him. He paused, almost beneath the tree, dropped to his knees and studied theground. Rainsford’s impulse was to hurl himself down like a panther, but he saw that thegeneral’s right hand held something metallic — a small automatic pistol. The hunter shook his head several times, as if he were puzzled. Then he straightened” This evidence shows how Rainsford experiences some conflict when he runs into the General while hunting.
  • “The general sucked in his breath and smiled. “I congratulate you,” he said. “You have won thegame.” This shows when Rainsford wins the game the resolution is solved.
