  • After the event, Gilbert partnered with Rosa Parks to help in the protest. Gilbert held high respect for Rosa Parks, his new friend.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955) Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on the bus. The law said that African Americans were to sit at the back of the bus and give way to the white people. Later, Rosa Parks was arrested. She was jailed but was soon bailed out by a civil rights leader. After the event, there was a dramatic rise in civil rights protestants. This was the start to a protest.

  • After partnering with Rosa Parks, Gilbert wanted to go and help a prominent figure for civil rights. Responses to King’s death varied. Black Americans were devastated, pained, and angered. Violence erupted in more than 125 American cities across 29 states. Nearly 50,000 federal troops occupied America’s urban areas.The number of black soldiers in Vietnam supporting Black Power increased dramatically.
  • (1971) Voting age lowered to 18. The drive to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 grew across the country during the 1960s and was driven in part by the military draft held during the Vietnam War. One of the people in court said: "...the right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age." Section I, Amendment 26 of the U.S. Constitution"
