Okay dad
Calm down my daughter, I've got an idea. Good thing your mom is a chemical engineer. Get in the car, let's go to the Laboratory.
MOM! DAD! All of the alcohols are sold out in the mall and even onlineee.. boohoo!!!
Kids go get an alkene and a bottle of water in the cabinet. Your dad will go get the acid.
Okay Mom!
Okay everyone listen up. I will now start the reaction and explain to you how it works, so listen carefully.
Alkenes can be converted to alcohols by the net addition of water across the double bond. The net addition of water to alkenes is known as hydration.
That's my wifeee!!!
The mechanism of hydration involves electrophlic addition of the proton (or acid) to the double bond to form a carbocation intermediate. Addition of water in the second step results in formation of an oxonium ion, which, upon deprotonation, gives the alcohol.
Emeged Mader, why so good?
WOW WHAT SORCERY!!!
My beautiful family, what you have just encountered is the preparation of alchohol from the hydration of Alkenes. And just like that we can now have tons of alcohol ready to be used in the impending crisis.
