  • This is where Waverly and her family lived on the second floor of the Chinese bakery. Where they could smell the red beans and sweet pastries.

  • Weaveryl was a curious person and while her mother was combing her hair she asked " Ma what is Chinese torture?" As her mother wanted to know what is was as well and who told her she gave a simple answer as we good at everything Americans are just too lazy.

  • This was Waverly's first tournament where she was battling with a 15-year-old Oakland child. This was when a wind came whispering to her ear the secrets that were needed. With that, she won her first tournament.
  • Waverly mother Lindo is forcing her daughter to avoid losing more chess piece in every game she goes to. In this we can see that the mother tends to control her.

  • Waverly was ashamed that her mother keeps on bragging about her. She did not need attention nor would she want it. This conflict between the two was because her mother keeps on bragging about her.

  • It's embarrassing.
  • Waverly's strength shows her supremacy, which causes her to lose touch with her family and overpowers her own self. Waverly fights to get control over her overbearing mother and assert her independence. Waverly is also engaged in a power struggle between Asian and American cultural influences, which is mirrored in the mother–daughter conflict.
