- In 1071, Seljuk Turks took over Jerusalem from the Fatimids. The Turks harassed pilgrims and marched on the Christian city of Constantinople. Because of this, the Byzantine Emperor asked Pope Urban II for help.#160;

- In 1095, Pope Urban II called for a crusade to free the Holy Land. He called on the soldiers of Christ to liberate Jerusalem and defend Constantinople from the Turks. The people were enthusiastic about the pope's call. Their slogan was Deus le veult or God wills it!
- I call for a crusade!
- About 150,000 people joined the crusade. The first group to go to the Holy City was a group of peasants led by Peter the Hermit. His army consisted of untrained men, women, and children.In, the end, the crusade was a success, and they won.
- INVADE THE HOLY CITY!!!!
- King Louis VII of France and the German Emperor organized the Second Crusade. Other monarchs such as King Louis's wife, or Elenor of Aquitaine, also joined this crusade. Despite its powerful backing, the second crusade failed. It failed because the leaders of the crusade got into an argument. The crusaders were unable to gain local support.
- Phillip II of France, Richard I of England, the Holy Roman Emperor and Fredrick I attempted a third crusade to reconquer the Holy City, following the capture of Jerusalem. In September of 1192, Richard and Saladin signed a peace treaty that reestablished the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

- The successes of the Third crusade allowed Westerners to maintain considerable states in Cyprus and on the Syrian coast. The failure to recapture Jerusalem inspired the subsequent Fourth Crusade of 1202-1204, but Europeans would only regain the city-and only briefly-in the Sixth crusade in 1229.
