- Beginning Stage
- Childbearing Stage
- Parenting Stage
- Begins with the couple's marriage, assuming the roles of spouses, establishing daily routine, and dividing up chores (living together, usually both have jobs)
- Launching Stage
- Begins with expectant parenthood, the couple prepares for coming child. When the child arrives the main focus becomes the infant's needs (added responsibilities, parenting brings couple together or increases conflicts)
- Mid-Years Stage
- Main goal is reorganizing the family to fit expanding world of school-age children as they each have individual needs/activities outside the home (parents must increase flexibility of family boundaries).
- Aging Stage
- Children begin to leave the family and the main focus is to reorganize as they leave (adjusting period).
- Focus shifts back to the couple and their relationship (day to day parenting has ending) but stay connected/supportive of their child/ren, they may become grandparents at this stage.
- Couple retires (or get a more part-time position) and there are more opportunities to focus on partner and self (hobbies, travel, rekindle friendships). Grandparenting is fufilling.
