  • Introduction
  • Vygotsky's Sociocultural Child Development Theory!
  • Today, class, we are learning all about Vygotsky's theory and how it compare's to Piaget's! Vygotsky theorized that culture and language are very important to a child' development. Especially in the classroom!
  • 3 Main Points:1. Culture is Significant in Learning2. Language is the root of Culture3. Individuals learn and develop their role in the community
  • Scaffolding & Guided Participation
  • Guided participation is helping a child perform an adult like activity until they can do it on their own.
  • Scaffolding and Guided Participation are very similar. Scaffolding is the focus on a student's ability to learn information through the help of a more informed person. When used correctly, a child can learn something they couldn't on their own.
  • Scaffolding: Learning that Ctrl+V = Copy
  • Guided participation: Showing a child how to type without looking at the keyboard
  • ZPD & Intersubjectivity
  • The Zone of Proximal Development is the space between do without assistance and what a learner can't do without assistance. Intersubjectivity is when two learners start a task at different understandings but end up at the same understanding. Each child's ZPD is important in this process, some might need more help than others.
  • The pawn can move 2 steps forward on the first move!!!
  • I don't know the difference between bishop and rook!!!!
  • Your goal is to get the other's king!
  • Private Speech & Inner Speech
  • Private speech and inner speech are very similar, however, private speech is outwards and inner speech is inside. Think talking to yourself vs. thoughtsBoth of these are used to regulate oneself and their behaviors.
  • Private speech: "I should read and not let myself play with the ball"
  • Vygotsky Vs. Piaget
  • Vygotsky theorized that a child's development improved more when they had help from outside forces. Such as the use of ZPD.
  • Piaget theorized that a child developed better using "experiments" and when they figured things out on their own. Through assimilation and accommodation.
  • So What?
  • Vygotsky's Sociocultural Child Development Theory!
  • Both Piaget and Vygotsky provided educators with important views on cognitive development in the child. This shows us, as teachers, that there is no one correct way to teach children. Learning should be specialized for each child you come in contact with.
  • 3 Main Points:1. Culture is Significant in Learning2. Language is the root of Culture3. Individuals learn and develop their role in the community
  • Inner speech: My teacher says that I have to finish reading to page 40 by the end of class.
  • While both theories can be seen and viewed as "correct," both could be used hand in hand.
