  • When the French arrived they used the ST. Lawrence to travel further inland. Jacques Cartier named this river because it was St Lawrence feast day . At this time the land around this water way was inhabited by the "Iroquoians"

  • The French settled in lower Canada and began trading furs and spreading their religion through the Missionaries with the Indigenous people. The middle men were the main people that collected merchandise.

  • In 1608 the French "established Québec city" and the rivalry between the French and the British was growing.
  • The first nations and the Coureur des bois married and had children. This new group was called the Metis many of these children grew up to be voyagers
  • While the rivalry grew between the French and the British, furs became slim resulting in wars ( THE BEAVER WARS) there was already a disagreement. The French and the British fought over the monopoly of the fur trade
