- The French society in the late 18th century was ruled by Louis XVI who inherited an empty treasury. He was married to Marie Antoinette who spent extravagantly. The king had to take loans from merchants and was in debt.

- 2. The treasury is empty! Maintenance of army, palace various wars and helping American colonies has put the state in more than 3 billion livres worth of debt!
- 2.You shall not worry, your highness! The state can increase taxes on the 3rd estate.
- The king has decided after consulting with his nobles that the taxes will be increased and there will be a rise in prices of bread as well. There is a discussion about sending troops to the city.
- 4. Thank you, gentlemen. I , hereby, order the implementation of today's discussion. Also, send troops into the city.
- 1. We have gathered here to find a solution to the problem of the treasury. This is a secret meeting and the conclusions should not be disclosed or else, you will be executed!
- 3. Yes, and prices of basic commodities like bread can be increased.
- The French society was divided into three estates. The underpriveleged section was struggling due to increase in prices of bread, high taxes and fear of troops attacking them. On the other side, the rich, nobility and clergy were enjoying special favours and didn't have to pay taxes..

- Rumours spread around the city that king has sent troops to open fire the people. The agitation in peoples' hearts toward the king increased.
- I've heard that military troops are entering the city to attack us!!!

- More than 7000 people gathered in front of the Town Hall to protest against the rising taxes and prices of bread. They damaged several government buildings and decided to march towards the Bastille fort.

- The protestors barged into the fortress prison of Bastille in search of ammunition. They killed the commander of Bastille and rescued 7 prisoners. Bastille was hated by most people as it symbolized the despotic and autocratic power of the king, Louis XVI. The fortress was demolished completely.
