- Because of Newton's first law of motion. All objects in motion stay in motion and objects at rest stay at rest, unless acted upon by and unbalanced force.
- Interesting, and what causes this?
- This is caused by inertia-the tendency of an object to do what it is already doing.
- In other words, the ball is in motion and the unbalanced force, which is the net causes the ball to stop.
- That's right!
- What if the object is at rest and I kick it?
- The ball was at rest, and you are the unbalanced force. The ball was originally at rest but you, the unbalanced force, applied a force to the ball causing it to move.
- So basically, the ball didn't stay at rest because it was interrupted by an unbalanced force.
- Exactly!
- Wow! Sir Isaac Newton is so smart to come up with the Law of Inertia.
