The Great Gatsby Chapter 4

- Gatsby drives himself and Nick into town. On the way Gatsby tells Nick his life story, about his education and family and how he ended up where he is. Nick finds out Gatsby was in the war.
- On their way to town, an officer pulls Gatsby are pulled over for speeding. Gatsby hands him a white card and the officer apologizes and lets him go. Nick is confused by this.
- Nick meets mayor Wolfshiem in the city with Gatsby. He thinks of him as a shady character and doesn't trust where Gatsby got his money from.
- After lunch Jordan and Nick meet up and she explains the conversation she had with Gatsby was about. We learn that Daisy and Gatsby were romantically involved before she married Tom. She married Tom when Gatsby went off to war.
- Jordan adds that Gatsby purposely bought in West Egg, so he could be across from Daisy. This makes Nick think about the first time he saw him reaching out for the green light. He now realises the green light was the dock light at Daisy's house.
