When Frederick Douglass first lived in the Hughes' family, his mistress had a "tendered heart", "treated him like a human being" and even taught him to read and write. His master was not surprisingly mean and violent. But as time went by, his mistress turned out to be like his master, or "even do(did) better". Slavery proved itself to be capable of changing people and things. FD was denied the right to read, but that didn't stop him from being knowledgeable.
You filthy little slave! STOP reading and writing! You people don't deserve an education!!!!!
