- Bill Lawrence went into Meemen-Shelby Forrest with two friends on August 31st. They were going squirrel hunting. At some point on their journey, Lawrence stopped to shoot a squirrel. When he turned to look at his friends, they were nowhere to be found.
- Main Event 3
- Lawrence walked around trying to find his friends or the truck. He was unable to find either. When it got dark, he laid down to rest. He heard helicopters above the trees, but they couldn't see him. On the next day, Lawrence drank the last of his water. He got more from a dirty puddle and ate nightcrawlers from under a log. He continued to walk for the rest of the day, taking breaks occasionally.
- Resolution/Rescue
- That night, Lawrence heard a helicopter above him. He scrambled to get his flashlight, but it was too late. His flashlight burnt out. He continued to walk the next day, finding persimmons to eat. The following day, he heard another helicopter. He tried to use his shirt as a flag, but it was no use. In the afternoon, he heard a chainsaw in the distance but was too weak to go to the sound.
- Lesson/Analysis
- When Lawrence woke up and began walking the next day, he came to a hill. He took a break because he didn't have the strength to climb. When he finally climbed the hill, he looked around. To his left, he saw a trail. Thinking this could be his chance, he took the trail.
- At the end of the trail, Lawrence came to a road. He was seen by two motorcyclists who told him that people were searching for him. They too Lawrence to the search team site in the forest. There, he was put on a stretcher to go to the hospital and was able to call his wife. He was saved.
- Always be extra prepared for things to go wrong. Bring extra food, water, etc. Never wander away from a group. Stay put when you're lost in a place like a forest, it makes it easier for search and rescue teams to find you.
