at the start of the book, we Are introduced to the main characters in it, molly, daisy, and Gracie. All related and all mixed-race meaning they all have white dads, the story of the movie is about the stolen generation and the mixed children that were taken away from their homes and put into a community shelter, and these 3 girls, once they get to the community shelter, decide to run away and travel along the rabbit-proof fence back to the home they were taken from.
we are then introduced to constable Riggs, the police officer who goes around aboriginal villages taking away these mixed children from their homes, in this scene daisy, molly, and Gracie are all taken away from their mothers and family as they are taken away in a car and their mothers and grandmothers try there best to stop the police officer but it just inst enough as they are taken away.
ln this scene we are then introduced to the community shelter that these three girls are taken to, it appears as a nice shelter with a roof over their heads and proper beds to sleep on unlike where they live back home but it just inst the same as its not where they belong and the white people there are very controlling and toxic.
After a few days of being at the community shelter the girls then decide to run away and risk a very long journey along the rabbit proof fence to get back to their homes, at first daisy is hesitant at first to leave as she is the youngest and not very caught on with their situation but eventually they all travel their way back home with the community shelter's tracker for kids who try and run away, a fellow aboriginal called moodoo trying to track them down.
After months of them travelling along the rabbit-proof fence, the girls are told by an aboriginal stranger that there is a train that will get them to where they're going much quicker than the current way they are going, however, the girls were hesitant about going as they didn't trust this stranger but Gracie didn't listen to the other 2 girls and decided to go by herself to the train station and when she went she got there she was caught by the policemen and never seen again.
After months of long walking, being hungry, thirsty, and having their own self-doubts of ever making it back home, they finally arrive back home to meet their mothers and grandmothers with lots of joy and emotion, since their big journey home no one has gone to visit them again and molly even decides to walk all the way back.
