- Tom and the devil are in a swamp discussing the humanity of wealthy civilians, and by the devil saying what he said, he's questioning the true perception of man by saying even if it looks good on the outside its not always what it seems to be.

- the swamp was thickly grown with great, gloomy pines and hemlocks
- Before Tom meets the devil he's walking around a dingy spooky swamp, its foreshadowing that something bad is gonna happen.

- Tom had a lurking dread that the devil after all would have his due.
- When Tom becomes guilty of the things hes done he starts to carry a bible with him all the and go to church.
- Guilt
- shortly after a thunderbolt falling in that direction seemed to set the whole forest in a blaze
- In this scene Tom is being taken off, it shows the result of the bad things hes done and agreed to in the past.
- Madness
- Tom Walker and his ill gotten wealth
- He has all of this new money now, but he did bad things to get it, and like the devil alluded to earlier, the wealthy are rotten at the core
- Sin
- After Tom makes his deal with the devil he comes home to discover that he has a black finger print on his forehead that can't be removed. It shows that he now belongs to the devil.
- the blackprint of a finger burned, as if it were, into his forehead, which nothing could obliterate
