  • Mária Telkes is a physical chemist and biophysicist who invented a solar distiller which evaporated seawater to drinkable water. Which is how she got her nickname the “Sun Queen”
  • Mária was born in Budapest, Hungary on December 12th 1900. Unfortunately, she died at the age of 94 on 2nd December 1995. Her father was Aladar Telkes. Although her mother and siblings are unknown. Mária attended elementary and high school in Budapest. After that she went to Eötvös Loránd University. Mária graduated with a B.A and a PhD in Physical Chemistry.
  • Mária moved to the United States in 1925, where she visited a relative who was a Hungairein consul in Cleveland, Ohio. There she was hired to work at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Her job was to research how energy is produced by living organisms. As George Crile was their leader they created a photoelectric machine and also wrote a book named the “Phenomenon Of Life ''. Mária worked as a biophysicist in the United States from 1939 to 1953. Then she joined a solar energy research club at the Massachusetts institute of technology.
  • During World War ll, Mária was recruited as a Civilian Advisor at the Office Of Scientific Research and Development by the United States government. That is where she invented a solar-powered water desalination machine. Little did she know it became such a famous machine. This happened because it helped soldiers have clean filtered waters during the rough times. It also helped in the US Virgin Island to help with their water problems.
  • In 1984, Mária conjoined with Eleanor Raymond who was an architect and Amelia Peabody who was a Philanthropist and a Sculptor at Dover Sun House. The system was designed so professionally and it was so accurate. It even had a special type of salt which would melt in the sun, then it would trap the heat in a compartment and release it when it had fully hardened and cooled. The system was put into action once the sunlight shining through the glass windows, which helps heat the air inside the compartment. Then the heated air would reflect off a metal sheet and pass through to another air space. Then on, fans would push the air to a storage compartment filled with the special salt ( sodium sulfate. These machines were inserted in between walls which would heat the rooms as the salt cooled.
  • In addition to this she received a donation from the Ford Foundation which was $45,000 which helped her create a solar powered oven for people with lack of technology. Mária even managed to add an extra feature so it would be easier for children to use. While she was building her solar powered oven she found a way for farmers to dry their crops faster by using the same technology. This machine was very important to society as it is still used today. Later in 1980, she helped the US Department Of Energy build a fully solar powered house. She received several awards for her amazing and creative ideas.
