- Holden Caulfield picks a fight with Stradlater, his peer at Pencey Preparatory School, in anger over romantic jealousy. He flees his school after the altercation.
- Holden travels to the city where he meets new people, friendly and dangerous, and pretends to be someone he is not while hiding out from the problems he has caused for himself at school.
- Holden is beaten by a criminal extortionist in his hotel room for attempting to commit a crime and ultimately backing out.
- Despite being on the run, Holden finds time to purchase a musical record for his sister Phoebe. Theme to remember: Holden's tenderness towards his siblings.
- After seeking advice from his teacher Mr. Antolini and ultimately fleeing when Mr. Antolini's behavior becomes disturbing, Holden finds a moment of peace when he is able to bring his sister Phoebe to an amusement park.
- Holden ends his address by revealing that he is currently staying in a home for the mentally disturbed and is in the process of recovering: the prior events as described are his reminiscences, which bring him sadness and yearning.
