  • While patrolling the street at 10 pm, the officer comes across a man leaning against the wall of a hardware store. • The policeman leaves to continue doing his rounds, and Bob continues waiting, He promised himself he would give his old pal 30 more minutes, and dismally waits as it starts drizzling.
  • The Note
  • HARDWARE STORE
  • After 20 minutes, a tall man turns up and hesitantly moves towards Bob. Upon seeing him, they instantly recognize each other. With great happiness, they greet each other and fill one another in about their well-being and occupation. Bob remarks how Jimmy seems to have grown taller.
  • As they walk hand in hand, they stop under a light and it is then that Bob sees 'Jimmy's nose has changed shape, realizing this was not his pal. 'Jimmy' reveals that he is actually a pain-clothes officer, sent to arrest 'Silky' Bob, a wanted criminal in Chicago. The plain-clothes officer hands Bob a letter from Patrolman Wells.
  • "Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When I saw your face in the torchlight, I saw it was the face of a man wanted in Chicago. Somehow I couldn't do it myself, so I went around and got a plain-clothes man to do thee job. Jimmy."
