- Communication takes many forms. Sometimes our students have different ways of communication.
- I believe communication is a RIGHT! Everyone deserves the ability to communicate effectively. Communication is much more than talking!
- Luckily - technology provides our students alternative methods of communication! Even art can be a method of communication.
- Why is communication important?
- Communication allows students to advocate for themselves and make choices in their daily lives. Imagine how great it would be to finally ask for milk after years of not having the skills to do so!
- Parents and those close to children with limited verbal ability have said their child has significantly more words in their mind than people can see. Luckily, AAC's can unlock the isolation and allow students to effectively communicate!
- It is empowering seeing people finally able to communicate after years of struggling. It makes me hopeful seeing parents be their child's voice via advocacy. You can feel the relief of parents once their child is finally given a voice of their own! But I am upset to see institutions unable to see past a child's lack of. verbal ability, and assume that child has a limited vocabulary in their mind!
- Art as communication was beautiful to see! I have a student who will often draw and paint to express what she would like to do and how she is feeling.
