- During Scout's first day of school, her teacher learns that she can read and write, and becomes upset because her father didn't teach her the correct way. When Scout speaks to Jem he informs her about the "Dewey Decimal System" which was a new system of teaching that they were using at school to help students learn differently.
- "Teach Me? He hasn't taught me anything Miss Caroline."
- "If he didn't teach you, who did?"
- In this scene Ms. Maudie is comparing Mr. Radley and Atticus, by this she says that Mr. Radley takes the bible too literally while Atticus is more of a morally correct man. She basically says that some men are more invested in getting into heaven than they are worried about their current life.
- "Atticus doesn't drink whiskey, he never drunk a drop in his life-nome, yes he did. He said he drank some one time nad didn't like it."
- "Wasn't talking about your father, what I meant was, if Atticus Finch drank until he was drunk he wouldn't be as hard as some men are at their best.
- There are just some kind of men who-who're so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one and you can look down the street and see the results."
