  • In the cities of the United States in the 1900's people buy things like what we do today such as foods like meat and medicines. But little did they know that back then those two products were unsafe to buy.
  • The meat lockers were infested with rats and mice and insects which got into the meat. Water from leaky pipes or grim in general would get into or onto this meat too. But that didn't stop factory workers to package it and sell it to markets for people to buy.
  • The medicine was very unhealthy as well with people labeling them as cure all and putting dangerous addictive drugs and even harmful chemicals into them. But the creators of these medicines were making money off of them and they cared little.
  • Soon a muckraker known as Upton Sinclair wrote a book called "The Jungle" which detailed the meat industry and the unhealthy and utterly disgusting stuff that was packaged in with the meat. Other Muckrakers joined him with the aid to spread the information about the contaminated meat and eventually drugs.
  • In 1906 two laws were eventually passed to protect consumers from these two problems of contaminated and harmful foods and drugs creating the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) and The Pure Food and Drug Act. These laws made it so that food and drugs have to be inspected by a government worker before moving to store shelves.
  • It is good that we have these laws today or we still might be eating meat with rodents in the mix or using unsafe medicines. Knowing this I for one am glad these laws are in place and you should too.
