- The first group pf crusaders got ready to leave for the Holy Land. Peter's "army" was untrained women, men, and children. They were not prepared for the long journey. As many was 150,000 people hurried to join.

- More professional armies followed. Most people were killed by the time the Turks arrived. Despite the setbacks, the First Crusade was a military success! They took the Muslim kingdom by surprise . The crusaders captured Jerusalem and established four crusaders in the Holy Land.
- The Second Crusade
- King Louis Vll of France and the German emperor organized the Second Crusade. The second Crusade failed. The crusaders treated the Muslim majority with disrespect. After it failed the Muslim leader, Saladin, grew stronger.

- The Third Crusade
- The third crusade was known as the "Crusade of the Kings". The fall of Jerusalem provoked the Third Crusade. Richard l of England became leader of this crusade. He won important victories and developed a courteous relationship with Saladin. They signed a truce.
- Saladin and Richard signed a truce. Christian pilgrims were free to travel. Saladin agreed to respect crusader lands. Jerusalem remained in Muslim hands.

- Yeah! Truce.
- The Fourth Crusade
- The fourth crusade had embarrassed the pope who had launched it. They funded their campaign by looting Christian cities along the route. Crusaders stormed the rich, Byzantine capital. They attacked women, stole relics, and destroyed things. The pope was furious.
