- In the land of Illyria, Duke Orsino enters, attended by his lords. Orsino is hopelessly in love with the beautiful Lady Olivia and pines away for her. But Lady Olivia mourns for her brother's death and vowed to never marry anyone.
- Act 3
- Viola and Sebastian get separated during a shipwreck and she finds herself stranded in Ilyria. Viola thinks her brother is dead and disguises herself as a man under the name Cesario.
- Act 4
- In Lady Olivia's household, her steward Malvolio mourns her death of her brother with her. Her uncle Sir Toby Belch drinks with Feste and his dupe, Sir Andrew Aguecheek. But since Malvolio is very arrogant they all plot against him by forging a fake letter from Olivia and tricking him into wearing yellow stockings.
- Act 5
- Meanwhile, Viola's brother Sebastian, who is unaware her sister is alive comes to Ilyria with a sea captain named Antonio. Then Sir Toby makes Aguecheeck duel with Cesario/Viola. Antonio rushes to save Cesario/Viola (thinking he is Sebastian) but then gets arrested.
- Aguecheek resumes the duel with Cesario/Viola but encounters Sebastian who wounds him. Olivia then interferes and leads Sebastian to a priest and thinks he's Cesario and marries him.
- Everything is made clear when he appears and the company sees both twins side by side. Viola will forever stay in her maiden attire to identify herself as Sebastian's twin sister. Orsino abandons his hopeless love for Olivia and marries Viola. Sir Toby marries Maria for her wit. The sad Malvolio remains single and seems jealous of the other's happiness. Feste sings.
