  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Violence Doesn't Solve Problems
  • In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Violence Doesn't Solve Problems. In the story on page #82, Charlie assumes that the dark figure is the monster and shoots it but it was just Pete Van Horn. This supports the theme because he jumped to conclusions thinking the dark figure was the monster and kilt it when he didn't have to use violence and could've waited to see for sure if it was a monster. The next event that relates to the theme takes place on pages #84 and #85 when Charlie accused Tommy, the kid of being the monster. After Charlie assumes the monster is Tommy they all start chasing him and screaming. This relates to the them because soon something might happen to Tommy, Steve, and Charlie because they are all getting accused on #85. Lastly, on page #87 it states, “There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices-to be found only in the minds of men.” In other words, this quote is saying that when they kept accusing everyone it could lead to something bad. In conclusion, the theme, Violence Doesn’t Solve Problems relates to the story because they kilt someone which didn’t help solve who the monster is, all the neighbors began trying to find a scapegoat which didn’t solve anything either, and lastly, they were accusing others who would later end up being kilt like Charlie.
