Embalming Process

- This pharaoh had fallen sick and died. Since he was rich and powerful, he is going to be mummified. But, first he must be embalmed.
- The body is first washed with good smelling wine and water. Then, most of the internal organs are removed because the organs are the first to decompose. The only organ left is the heart.
- The body is left to dry for 40 days, and then it's washed again. The organs are wrapped in linen and put back in the body. Now, the body is ready to be wrapped.
- The head and neck are wrapped first with linen. Then the fingers and toes are separately wrapped. The legs and arms are then each wrapped. An amulet is placed between the arms to protect the body in the afterlife.
- A priest would read spells to ward off evil spirits. A Book of the Dead was placed in the mummy's hands. In the end, the mummy is placed in a coffin that gets put in a bigger coffin.
- A funeral is held. The "Opening of the Mouth" ceremony is performed. This allows the mummy to eat and drink again. The coffin is placed into a large sarcophagus, along with other valuable objects.
