- Allusions is important throughout this tale because Smiley named his frog (Dan'l Webster) after a former statesman and politician. He uses names of known people to show that his frog is known for being something important.
- You are gonna be the best jumping frog
- Theme is significant throughout the tale because it shows deception and competition are a pattern throughout the story. Smiley always chooses the underdog and comes back winning within the last few seconds.
- The speaker in the tale is an educated man. This is important because Twain is showing the difference between the East (educated) and West (uneducated).
