- Douglass is working in the fields when Covey comes and starts whipping him for not working hard enough.
- Get up, you worthless slave!
- Master, one of the slaves is very ill. There is no one to bring wheat to the fan.
- Douglass fell ill because he was out on a very hot day. He fell on the ground and could not do anything. Covey heard the fans stop and asked what happened. He then went to examine how bad the situation was.
- What happened? Why did the fans stop?
- Thank you, dear friend.
- Sandy, one of Douglass’s close friends, found a root in the woods. This root, when kept on the right side of a slave, will prevent them from ever being whipped by their master. Douglass is skeptical, but decides to try it.
- I noticed you are whipped quite often by Master Covey. Here is a root from the woods. If you always keep it on your right, he won't whip you anymore.
- When Douglass is returning back to Covey’s land, he goes into the loft. Covey was about to tie Douglass’s legs with a rope, but Douglass jumped to avoid it. Covey then grabbed Douglass’s legs and taunted him. Douglass wanted revenge, so he grabbed Covey by the throat to choke him.
- How dare you!
- Ha! You can't escape m-!
- You cannot hurt me anymore, Covey. My future is in my own hands!
- After Douglass rebelled against Covey, he developed confidence in himself and hope. He no longer thought of himself as a slave, so his masters had no more power over him.
- I am only a slave physically. In all other aspects, I am a free man!
- Ha! You are still a slave under my control.
