  • Douglass comes back to the plantation and listens to Covey who doesn’t seem mad about Douglass running away. Covey tells Douglass to do some work, Douglass listens to Covey. Douglass waits until Monday to see if the advice that Sandy had given Covey is true. Later in the morning while Douglass was working in the barn, Covey walked in with a long rope. Just as Douglass walks out of the stable, Covey catches hold of Douglass with the rope onto his legs. This is the fight that allows Douglass to gain his courage and hope of becoming free.
  • The fight between Douglass and Covey begins. Douglass caught on to Covey by his throat and they both held on to each other. Covey then trembled which gave Douglass assurance. Covey called out to Hughs for help and Hughs tried to help but then got kicked under the ribs by Douglass. Douglass and Covey fought for hours and Douglass was victorious. The battle with Covey was Douglass’s changed Douglass tremendously. The fight caused Douglass to gain his courage and gain his hope for being a free man.
  • From the outcome of the fight between Douglass and Covey, Douglass has never been whipped again. Douglass stood up against Covey. Douglass standing up against Covey caused him to gain his courage and hope and it made him want to do anything it takes to become free. Douglass said that although he might remain a slave in form, the day had passed forever when he could remain a slave in fact. He also said that the white man that expected to succeed in whipping him, must also succeed in killing him.
