When Queen Elizabeth I died, hers cousin, James I took her place. As he wasn't catholic, one of the problems he had were the Catholics. The Puritans wanted simple services and plain churches but James rejected them.

The catholics were really angry, so they decided to blow up James with gunpowder while he was on the Houses of Parliament and then they would sieze his daughter Elizabeth and make sure she was brought up as a Catholic.

Guy Fawkes was a soldier and in 1594, he join the group of Catholics to kill James. He was to stay in London and light the fuse on November 5th.
Lord Monteagle
As one of the plotters didn't want to die, he gave to one of Lord Montagle's servant a letter with a grim warning about the Catholic's plan.
When Lord Montagle was just about to have dinner, his servant brought him the letter. The servant explained him that a stranger had given it to him in the street. Then, he read out the note and Lord Montagle got surprised by the grim warning.
After Lord Montagle hear the warning from one of the plotters, he went straight to London to see the King's ministe, Robert Cecil. When Cecil hear what was happening, he reported it to the King.
